"Journey of Life 20"
Q:
Can you please tell us more about creating your winning image, “Journey of Life 20”?
A:
In July, as the dry season begins, millions of wildebeests, zebras and other herbivorous wildlife form a migratory army from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Africa, to the Masai Mara National Nature Reserve in Kenya, in search of water and food, where photographers often seek creative opportunities. While in that season of 2023, I focused my lens on Lake Magadi. It hasn't rained for nearly four months, and the dry lake bed has replaced the patterns and unpredictable colors of the lake floor, and it seems that there is no photographic element left at all. However, as a flock of flamingos flew over a small patch of ochre-red lakebed by the lake, I immediately captured the moment in an in-camera composition in the helicopter. The overall effect seems to evoke the sights and sounds of spring on earth.
Q:
What inspired you to photograph this particular scene?
A:
The abundance of life lies in every affectionate embrace with the world. Human beings are small compared to nature, but they are creatures with infinite desire to explore. We have always longed for the sky, so we invented the aircraft, which also brought a new and amazing perspective to photographers to create photography. Lake Magadi means "soda" in Swahili, and flocks of flocks of flamingos soar over the salt lake, adding to the beauty of this tranquil lake, a dynamic echo that celebrates the vitality and beauty of nature. What could be more appealing than the surface of this lake that has attracted and inspired me countless times to take a helicopter ride to capture the beauty that nature has given us?
Q:
You’ve created many works in East Africa. What are some of your favorite scenes in Kenya or East Africa to photograph?
A:
Photography is a journey of the mind, and every time the shutter is pressed, it is a tribute to life. I am grateful for any gift from nature and cherish every beautiful encounter. Ever since I first set foot on East Africa in 2017, I've fallen in love with everything about it. If I have to choose the scenes I like to shoot more, light and shadow, animal landscapes, animal affection, and animal portraits are areas that I am more passionate about.
Q:
What are you working on next?
A:
The meaning of meeting is to shine a light on each other. Devote myself to nature, see the heavens and the earth, see all beings, and see myself. Next I will continue to be sensitive and enthusiastic about my creation, and in the process of creating again and again, I will continue to hone my posture of fighting with the world, and continue to discover more unknowns and possibilities.
Q:
What photographers inspire you?
A:
Rabindranath Tagore said: Not hammer-strokes, but dance of the water sings the pebbles into perfection. Two important people in my life enlightened and sublimated my perception and understanding of photography. The first was my father, an enlightener with a natural inspiration for photography. The second is Jeffrey Wu, my photography teacher whom I admire. How precious it is, how fortunate it is.
